Roy Rogers & the Delta Rhythm Kings

When: Sat., May 23, 8 & 10 p.m. 2009

Roy Rogers started playing rock guitar when he was a kid in Vallejo, but hearing a Robert Johnson record changed the course of his life and led him to slide guitar. He joined John Lee Hooker's band in 1981 and produced and played on two Grammy-winning albums with the legend, The Healer and Mr. Lucky. Meanwhile, he led his own barn-burning trio, Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings. The band is one of the finest blues outfits going, with Rogers' pyrotechnic slide-guitar leading the finely honed attack. Adept at swamp rock, boogie, blues shuffles, jazz, and funk, Rogers and the band always leave behind a roomful of satisfied fans. The band celebrates the release of its new album, Split Decision, at Yoshi's (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco) on Saturday, May 23. 8 p.m. & 10 p.m., $20. Yoshis.com
