Roomful of Blues

When: Thu., July 7, 8 & 10 p.m. 2011

It's been almost seven years since Roomful of Blues visited the Bay Area, one of the group's favorite stomping grounds. There have been changes in the lineup over the past 43 years, and sax man Rich Lataille is the only member left from Roomful's best-known incarnation. That said, the band's hard-driving sound -- a combination of jump blues, early R&B, swing jazz and greasy blues -- remains in place. On their new album Hook, Line and Sinker the band plays a repertoire of standards with its own kind of fire and brimstone. Phil Pemberton's soulful, growling vocals and the impressive guitar work of Chris Vachon support the band's always sizzling horn section. At Yoshi's (510 Embracadero West, Oakland) on Thursday, July 7.8 p.m. and 10 p.m., $12, $20. Yoshis.com
