The podcast and radio show 99% Invisible tells the stories behind design decisions that shape your life, but that you likely take for granted. Hosted by El Cerrito-based Roman Mars, the show brings new meaning to ordinary objects and architecture by revealing the thought processes that go into their making. As previously reported in the Express (“Building Public Radio 2.0,” 11/12/14), Mars began the show as a minute-long KALW segment, which eventually stretched to four and a half minutes. But after the show gained popularity and Mars raised $42,000 on Kickstarter in one day in 2012, he turned the 99% Invisible into a fascinating fifteen-minute-long segment on multiple radio stations and online. Beyond the impeccable production and sharp writing, part of the podcast’s appeal is Mars’ charm. His smooth, casual delivery is infinitely more enjoyable than that certain Serial host. (Sorry, Sarah. It’s not personal!) And with podcasts enjoying much popularity lately, many are likely interested in how they are designed and constructed. Mars will be offering a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of 99% Invisible at Prospect Sierra School (960 Avis Dr., El Cerrito) with a live broadcasting session and talk on January 28 at 7 p.m. Fans, here’s your chance to put a face to the man in your headphones.
