Rogue Wave

When: Sat., May 3, 9 p.m. 2008

Grand Ole Party is what used to be called a power trio. With Kristin Gundred on vocals and drums, dropping a solid, basic heart-thumping groove, Mike Krechnyak keeping the beat moving forward with his aggressive bass, and guitarist Paul Labno alternating between short, tasty lead lines and clanging, funky comped chords. They're a solid blues/rock combo, with hints of dub reggae and Eastern European Gypsy mania in the mix, but it'sGundred's vocals that are the focal point. She has a potent, bluesy wail that echoes Mae West, Bessie Smith, Grace Slick, and Janis Joplin. Grand Ole Party opens for Rogue Wave on Friday, May 3 at the Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $18.50. LiveNation.com
