Rodrigo y Gabriela

When: Sat., Feb. 9, 8 p.m. 2008

Acoustic heavy metal may seem like an oxymoron, but somehow Rodrigo y Gabrielamake this unlikely scenario an effortless reality. Raised on a healthy diet of Megadeth, Slayer, and Testament, the Mexican duo unplugged in recent years and made its way busking around Europe. A chance meeting with Damien Rice led to Rodrigo y Gabriela opening a number of Irish dates for him, and before long they were convening with one-time Radiohead producer John Leckie on their 2006 self-titled debut. Defined by a gorgeous and fleet-fingered display of six-string dexterity, the nine instrumentals combine flamenco-like flair with hard rock aggression where furious strumming and rat-a-tat fingertaps dot originals as well as eclectic Metallica and Led Zeppelin covers. Expect more of the same on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Warfield (982 Market St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $28.50, $35. LiveNation.com
