Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival

When: Sun., July 10, 2:15 p.m. 2011

If you want a good idea of where popular Bay Area metal has been and where it is now, the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival could be your study guide. Among the headliners of this metal-for-the-masses festival is Oakland thrash legends Testament, which has been shredding since 1983 despite numerous lineup changes. Fellow Oakland band Machine Head has cultivated a similar worldwide fan base, having toured with the likes of Metallica and Hatebreed. On the smaller stage, AllShall Perish rounds out the local lineup. Set to release its fourth album, This Is Where It Ends, later this month, the deathcore outfit appeals to a younger crowd but has enough palm-muted riffs and virtuosity to singe the eyebrows off the Death Magnetic set. Though somewhat of an anomaly in this lineup, Portland's Red Fang shouldn't be missed: big riffs, solid musicianship, and a fun attitude -- a welcome diversion from what will likely be a day of getting pummeled. Good luck. Also with Disturbed, Godsmack, Megadeth, Trivium, Suicide Silence, Unearth, Straight Line Stitch, and Kingdom of Sorrow on Sunday, July 10, at Shoreline Amphitheatre (1 Amphitheatre Pkwy, Mountain View). 2:15 p.m., $35.50-$61.
