RockNRolla

Rated R 114 minutes 2008

Are you a fan of Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels? What about its all-but-a-remake Snatch? If so, you should probably just rewatch them instead of buying tickets to the writer-director’s latest, RockNRolla. Ritchie has not only basically made the same story about British thugs double-crossing each other amidst swirling editing he’s already told twice — he’s made it worse. At least Snatch felt comically inventive. RockNRolla, by contrast, is so unimaginative, it literally steals an extended gag from Snatch — that of a seemingly invincible Eastern European thug who survives whatever you throw at him. Gerard Butler replaces Jason Statham as Ritchie’s heavy here, a charming thug trying to make a dishonest living, but even the actor’s considerable talents can’t make RockNRolla feel fresh (114 min.).
