Ordinary-looking pop-music star bio of Elton John -- with actor Taron Egerton, doing his own singing, in the lead role – is rescued by its production numbers, showcasing an array of the singer-songwriter’s infectious chart-topping tunes. His life is not all that different than that of most showbiz icons, except for insecurities about his homosexuality and his incessant search for love and approval. Actor-turned-director Dexter Fletcher wisely puts all his money on the music. Apt support by Jamie Bell as John’s writing partner Bernie Taupin, with Bryce Dallas Howard, Richard Madden, Steve Mackintosh, and Stephen Graham as various obstacles. You know the story, you know the songs – if that doesn’t describe you, this U.K./U.S.A. co-prod may be a chore to sit through. Screenplay by Lee Hall.
