Robots are Art

Your average biomorphic toy couldn't hold a candle to the robots who recently colonized Oakland's Float Gallery for the Robots Are Art exhibit. They include an angry homeless robot who rolls around in his wheelchair and spits out profanities, an introspective robot who paints pictures, and a nerdy robot who makes home videos of plants. This Saturday, Dec.15, they'll all compete in a special pageant that emphasizes form and function over physical beauty (though it will likely include categories for the sexiest robot and the one who most looks like a reflection of society). The judge panel will include two humans -- Anybots CEO Trevor Blackwell and Robotics Society of America president David Calkins -- and one humanoid, a multi-million dollar Anybot named Monty, who purports to be "the butler of the future." Frank Garvey will open the free event at 6 p.m. with a compelling lecture on the history of robots. Through January 18. TheFloatCenter.com
