Robert Gordon

When: Thu., Feb. 6, 7 p.m. 2014

It’s not an overstatement to say that were it not for the legendary Memphis soul record label Stax — home at various points in time to Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Booker T. and the M.G.’s, and literally hundreds of other artists — the US musical landscape as we know it would be very, very different. It is, as you might imagine, a rich history, and longtime music journalist Robert Gordon chronicles it lovingly in Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion, which he’ll present, along with video, at Books Inc. Alameda (1344 Park St., Alameda). Consider it a history lesson.
