Riverboat Gamblers

When: Sun., May 31, 8 p.m. 2009

Despite getting their start shortly after fellow Texans and proggyemo merchants At the Drive-In, Riverboat Gamblers always preferred an old-school approach to punk that would undoubtedly get nods of approval from the band's heroes in the Clash and Rocket From the Crypt. As a result, the Gamblers have earned themselves a reputation for having one of the most raucous live shows around. So much so that Rancid has picked the quintet for its forthcoming tour. In the meantime, Riverboat Gamblers will be singing about drinking and gambling, cherrypicking fare off its new opus Underneath the Owl and having frontman Mike Wiebe attempt various ways of inflicting physical harm on his person at the Independent (628 San Divisadero St., San Francisco) on Sunday, May 31. 8 p.m., $12.
