Rites of Passage

When: Sun., Dec. 12, 3 p.m. 2010

Global ambassadors of African and contemporary dance since 1972, Oakland's renowned Dimensions Dance Theater has collaborated with artists from Hugh Masekela to Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company. Perhaps its most significant partnership, however, is with Oakland youth: Every year, Dimensions' award-winning Rites of Passage program brings low-cost dance classes to hundreds of kids ages eight to eighteen. Celebrate the season with them at It Takes a Village, the program's annual show honoring Kwanzaa, at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts (1428 Alice St., Oakland) on Sunday, Dec. 12. Telling a story of young people on a quest to restore their community, the kids perform alongside Oaktown Jazz Workshop, Destiny Arts, and Dimensions dancers in a unique blend of jazz, modern, hip-hop, Haitian and Guinean dance, spoken word, and percussion. With that mix of media, every talent has a chance to shine. 3 p.m., $10-$15. 510-465-3363 or
