High-quality sports documentary has a twin story line: the need for a group of young Rwandan cyclists to overcome the emotional scars of their country’s genocidal civil war in the Nineties; and the work of Team Rwanda cyclists to become world-class under the guidance of American coach Jock Boyer. The doc covers five years of arduous training and competition, 2007 to 2012, culminating in Rwanda’s qualification for the London Olympics. Director/co-editor/co-producer T.C. Johnstone gets extremely close to his subjects, and the race footage is everything a cycling addict, or even a casual admirer, could hope for. Narrated by Forest Whitaker (79 min.).
