When: Fri., Feb. 22, 7 p.m. 2008

From a leading hot-dog expert to a spy who helped free slaves, Berkeley has been home to one-of-a-kind characters for well over a century, as revealed in local historian Richard Schwartz' Eccentrics, Heroes, and Cutthroats of Old Berkeley, a compendium of memorable souls. At Bay Books (2415 San Ramon Valley Rd., San Ramon) on Friday, Feb. 22, Schwartz introduces ranchers, saloonkeepers, architects, and others who made their marks on a landscape that was once so rural that, by night, residents could see the Northern Lights. 7 p.m.
