Richard Bona

When: Tue., July 6, 8 & 10 p.m. 2010

Richard Bona came to the US to explore his fascination with jazz, and soon became the musical director of Harry Belafonte's touring band. Born in Cameroon, the bassist is a master of jazz, makossa (a dance rhythm that combines jazz and indigenous styles), high life, reggae and more. His first album, Scenes from My Life, introduced his patented blend of West African dance music and jazz. Since then he's added funk, samba, R&B and Latin influences to his music to create a smooth propulsive groove that pleases both dancers and hard core jazz buffs. RichardBona and his bandplay at OaklandYoshi's(510 Embarcadero) on Tuesday, July 6, 8 p.m. ($26) & 10 p.m. ($16). Yoshis.com
