Rice & Bones

Restaurant Details

Unless you’re a student or faculty member at UC Berkeley, there’s rarely a reason to eat on campus. That changed when Charles Phan opened Rice & Bones, a Vietnamese-ish cafeteria inside Wurster Hall. Phan is best known for The Slanted Door, his upscale Vietnamese restaurant in San Francisco that won the 2014 James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant. Rice & Bones, Phan’s first foray into the East Bay, features a few Slanted Door favorites, such as the spring rolls, pho, and jicama and grapefruit salad. At lunch, most diners opt to build a rice plate out of roughly a dozen pre-made dishes that line the counter — a fast and tasty option, but not the best if you’re finicky about temperature. For optimal freshness, order something from the bamboo steamer baskets or off the menu.
