Versatile East Bay vocalist Rhonda Benin spends a good deal of her time as a performer making sure her fellow artists are in the mix. Her eighth-annual “Just Like a Woman” showcase returns to Freight & Salvage next month featuring a roster brimming with bodacious talent. But she can throw down on her own account just fine, and her birthday gig promises a winning combination of jazzy R&B and soulful jazz. Immersed in African-American music’s manifold currents, an incalculably rich heritage that shapes every note she sings, Benin is a true keeper of the blues flame. She’s joined by a cast of musicians worthy of a party themselves, with the great Tammy Hall on piano, veteran bassist Ron Belcher, drummer Alcide Marshall, Paul Branin on tenor saxophone and guitar, and the flamboyantly gifted trumpeter Geechi Taylor.
