Rez Abbasi

When: Wed., Feb. 27, 8 p.m. 2008

Mixing the freewheeling, post-bop sounds of the Village Vanguard with classical Punjabi influences and microtonal fusion styles that improve on guitarist Charlie Hunter, Karachi-born sitar-guitarist RezAbbasi produces some of the most fascinating music in modern jazz. His 2006 album Bazaar combines tabla, sitar, mridangam hand drum, rhythmic scatting, sitars, whistling, and Hammond organ with bewitching vocals from Indian folk singer KiranAhluwalia. Featuring all original tunes, Abbasi'sBazaar is at once preternatural, complex, and arresting. He performs Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Red Poppy Art House (2698 Folsom St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $14.
