More than 5,000 communities across the country participate annually in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, in which team members take turns running and walking around a track for 24 hours, raising money for and awareness of cancer. That's 24 continuous hours, a nod to the notion that cancer never sleeps. On Saturday, Aug. 13, Oakland's Montclair neighborhood hosts its first Relay for Life event at SkylineHigh School (12250 Skyline Blvd., Oakland), where cancer survivors, people who know or have lost someone to the disease, and humanitarians alike are invited to bring their tents, sleeping bags, and running shoes to join in the daylong fund-raiser. 10 a.m., $10 registration fee. 925-768-0566 or
