Red Army

Rated PG 85 minutes 2015

For a sports documentary, filmmaker Gabe Polsky’s profile of star Russian ice hockey player Slava Fetisov covers a lot of ground – it’s a chronicle of defenseman Fetisov’s up-and-down career, the background story of the famous “unbeatable” Red Army team, and a thumbnail portrait of the former Soviet Union’s rocky transition from managed socialism to wild-and-woolly capitalism, all in one entertaining package. Writer-director Polsky (The Motel Life) has great fun with TV game footage, Cold War commentary newsreels (Reagan, Gorbachev, et al.), and, at one point, the spectacle of a squad of trained bears wearing ice skates and practicing slap shots. A must-see for hockey fans, and well worth the time even for non-sports-fans (76 min.)
