Prairie City Race Series California’s largest weekly mountain bike and cyclocross race event, Prairie City is a ten-race series with hundreds of riders each week and multiple waves. Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim Put this one on your calendar for 2015; as always, it sold out months ahead of race day. A challenging race for experienced open-water swimmers, the event is limited to 800 entrants. The Best of the Bay Century The Cherry City Cyclists of San Leandro string together some of the finest cycling roads throughout the East Bay in this epic ride. Sections include Bear Creek Road, Happy Valley, Wildcat Canyon, South Park, Grizzly Peak, and more. Berry Creek Falls Trail Run Named for the 65-foot Berry Creek Falls, located along the course route, this run features a wide range of habitats including grand old redwoods, steep wooded canyons, and dry ridge-tops. Dick Houston Memorial Woodminster Cross-Country Race The third and final race in the East Bay Trail Championships Triple Crown series. This scenic, nine-mile loop on trails in Oakland’s forested Joaquin Miller Park, now in its 49th year, features plenty of hills and a killer climb known affectionately as “the Woodmonster.” Sun., June 22, in the Pinewood Picnic Area at 3600 Joaquin Miller Rd. 9 a.m., $20-$25. Dipsea Race Founded in 1905, the oldest trail race in America travels 7.4 gorgeous miles though Stinson Beach, Muir Woods, and Mt. Tamalpais State Park. The Dream Mile An annual outing in ten cities across the country organized to benefit Vibha, a nonprofit that aids underprivileged children in the United States and India. Half-marathon, 10K, and 5K courses are offered, complemented by a carnival with games and activities. Du-TOES If you’ve always wanted to do a triathlon, but don’t like to swim, this event is for you: a run/bike/run duathlon or run/bike/kayak triathlon (your choice). Folsom Sprint, International, and Long-Course Triathlons Hosted by USA Productions in and around Folsom Lake outside Roseville, the sprint features a 1/2-mile swim, 19-mile bike ride, and 3.1-mile run; the international-length race features a 1.5K swim, 40K ride, and 10K run; and the long-course race features a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile ride, and 13.1-mile run. Forest of Nisene Marks Marathon A coastal setting naturally cooled by fog leaves runners to focus on the important details: hilly and steep terrain on a mix of roads and single-track trails that course through a beautiful redwood forest. Full Moon/Sunset Paddle This romantic, UC Berkeley-sponsored excursion leads participants beyond the Golden Gate in tandem sit-on-top kayaks to watch the sunset and the full moon rise above the East Bay hills. Golden Gate Sharkfest Swim Have what it takes to swim 1.6 miles in the bay under the Golden Gate Bridge? Swimmers will be transported by ferry to the south tower of the bridge, then swim back past the north tower to finish at Horseshoe Cove in Sausalito. Kaiser Permanente Women’s Fitness Festival This tenth-annual festival features a half-marathon run and a 5K run/walk. Proceeds benefit WEAVE, which fights domestic violence and sexual assault. Lake Chabot Trail Challenge Hosted by the Castro Valley Track Club, this is the second race in the East Bay Triple Crown Trail Championship. Orca Alcatraz Challenge Aquathalon/Swim Swimmers flock from around the world to escape Alcatraz by fighting strong currents and frigid water. Swim distance totals 1.5 miles, followed by an optional 7-mile run through the Presidio and across the Golden Gate Bridge. Youth and adult divisions; relay option available. San Francisco Marathon The only race to run the roadbed of the Golden Gate Bridge (instead of the sidewalks), the San Francisco Marathon features a full marathon, two half-marathons (runners can choose which half), and a 5K. The full course starts and finishes on the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building and encircles the northern half of the city. Back by popular demand: the 52.4-mile double-marathon. San Lorenzo River Trail Run Experience 300-foot-tall, 1,500-year-old redwoods; lush stream canyons; open meadows; pine and oak forests; and chaparral-covered ridges on this race with five distances ranging from 10K to 50K. See Jane Run Alameda Women’s Half-Marathon and 5K A “celebration of women of all sizes, ages, and fitness levels,” this flat race takes place along Alameda’s Bay Trail and offers views of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge. Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic Two days of hot-air ballooning, food, crafts, tethered balloon rides, and other fun — including plenty of kid-friendly entertainment. Organizers call it “a celebration of Wine Country’s most beautiful sites” and “a day to be remembered,” even if weather grounds balloons from flying any higher than 100 feet. Statuto Race Now in its 94th year, the Statuto Race offers a taste of Italy in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. Tahoe Rim Trail 165-Mile Segment Hiking Program Complete the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail in manageable segments over the course of the summer, either on Wednesdays or Fridays. Like-minded outdoors enthusiasts and knowledgeable volunteers from the Tahoe Rim Trail Association will join and assist you. Registration is full for this year, so plan for 2015. $550. Trail Quake 2014 So named because it travels the San Andreas Trail, Trail Quake offers racers three distances to choose from: 5K, 10K, and half-marathon. The longer runs ascend peaks offering spectacular views of the South Bay, the Peninsula, and beyond, while all three make use of narrow single-track trails. Tri for Fun The first of three non-competitive, short-distance triathlons taking place at Shadow Cliffs Regional Park in Pleasanton throughout the summer. Each features a 400-yard swim, an 11-mile bike ride, and a 3.1-mile run. The series is designed for novices, but can also offer great training and time-trial opportunities to experience triathletes. Walt Stack DSE Double Dipsea Run the Dipsea — twice. This highly challenging course, Walt Stack’s favorite, has about 4,500 feet of elevation gain and is organized as a handicap race. Alcatraz “Escape from the Rock” Duathlon This 34-year-old San Francisco tradition begins with a 1.5-mile swim through sixty-degree waters from Alcatraz Island to the shore and concludes with a 7-mile run to Fort Point and Aquatic Park. Bad Bass Half-Marathon/10K/5K Brazen Racing encourages you to “run like a bad bass at Lake Chabot” at this annual event. The 5K is mostly on paved trails and includes small hills; the 10K and half-marathon spend half their time on dirt and include one major hill. Barb’s Race A women-only long-course triathlon featuring a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile ride, and 13.1-mile run. In fact, it’s the only all-women’s half-distance triathlon in the world! The Berkeley Kite Festival Presented by Highline Kites of Berkeley, the annual Berkeley Kite Festival is a one-of-a-kind full-day event for kite aficionados and the curious alike. Dirty Dozen and Half-Dozen Endurance Run Do you have what it takes to go for six or twelve hours straight? Test your mettle with this run at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline along a gentle, 3.4-mile loop consisting primarily of dirt fire trails. Donner Lake Triathlon This huge triathlon event allows participants to swim in the beautiful, clear water of Donner Lake, bike along Highway 40 for spectacular views of the alpine lake, and finally run another course around the lake. Vineman Full Triathlon Established in 1990, Vineman is the oldest independent Ironman-distance triathlon in the continental United States.
