Forest of Nisene Marks Marathon A coastal setting naturally cooled by fog leaves runners to focus on the important details: hilly and steep terrain on a mix of roads and single-track trails that course through a beautiful redwood forest. Full Moon/Sunset Paddle This romantic, UC Berkeley-sponsored excursion leads participants beyond the Golden Gate in tandem sit-on-top kayaks to watch the sunset and the full moon rise above the East Bay hills. Previous paddling experience recommended; swimming ability required. Thu., June 12, at the UC Aquatic Center at the Berkeley Marina, 122 University Ave. 7 p.m., $35-$45. Golden Gate Sharkfest Swim Have what it takes to swim 1.6 miles in the bay under the Golden Gate Bridge? Swimmers will be transported by ferry to the south tower of the bridge, then swim back past the north tower to finish at Horseshoe Cove in Sausalito. Hook and Ladder Run The sixth-annual running of this benefit for the Livermore-Pleasanton Firefighters Foundation includes a 5K run/walk, 10K run, and kids' one-mile fun run. Sun., June 1, at Wente Vineyards, Livermore. 8 a.m., $15-$45. OnYourMarkEvents.com

Kaiser Permanente Women's Fitness Festival This tenth-annual festival features a half-marathon run and a 5K run/walk. Proceeds benefit WEAVE, which fights domestic violence and sexual assault. Lake Chabot Trail Challenge Hosted by the Castro Valley Track Club, this is the second race in the East Bay Triple Crown Trail Championship. It's a hilly, 13.1-mile run around and above Lake Chabot, offering great scenery and East Bay views. A 5K race is also featured. Sun., June 1, at the Lake Chabot Marina. 8 a.m., $30-$60. Luv Run San Francisco A 5K run that doubles as a singles mixer — runners wear bibs announcing their relationship status. (Those in relationships are welcome to join, too.) Sun., June 29, at Crissy Field. 8:30 a.m., $55. LuvRun.com

Orca Alcatraz Challenge Aquathalon/Swim Swimmers flock from around the world to escape Alcatraz by fighting strong currents and frigid water. Swim distance totals 1.5 miles, followed by an optional 7-mile run through the Presidio and across the Golden Gate Bridge. Youth and adult divisions; relay option available. San Francisco Marathon The only race to run the roadbed of the Golden Gate Bridge (instead of the sidewalks), the San Francisco Marathon features a full marathon, two half-marathons (runners can choose which half), and a 5K. The full course starts and finishes on the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building and encircles the northern half of the city. Back by popular demand: the 52.4-mile double-marathon. San Lorenzo River Trail Run Experience 300-foot-tall, 1,500-year-old redwoods; lush stream canyons; open meadows; pine and oak forests; and chaparral-covered ridges on this race with five distances ranging from 10K to 50K. San Francisco Summer Solstice 6, 12, and 24-Hour Run Run for hours while testing your limits and aiming for a personal record on a precisely measured USATF-certified course around the Crissy Field lagoon measuring 1.061 miles. Sat., June 21, at Crissy Field. 8 a.m., $60-$130. PCTrailRuns.com

See Jane Run Alameda Women's Half-Marathon and 5K A "celebration of women of all sizes, ages, and fitness levels," this flat race takes place along Alameda's Bay Trail and offers views of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge. Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic Two days of hot-air ballooning, food, crafts, tethered balloon rides, and other fun — including plenty of kid-friendly entertainment. Organizers call it "a celebration of Wine Country's most beautiful sites" and "a day to be remembered," even if weather grounds balloons from flying any higher than 100 feet. Statuto Race Now in its 94th year, the Statuto Race offers a taste of Italy in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. Hosted by the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club, the event features a five-mile race and a two-mile walk. Proceeds benefit Stand Up to Cancer. Sun., June 1, at 1630 Stockton St. 9 a.m., $25-$30. Tahoe Rim Trail 165-Mile Segment Hiking Program Complete the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail in manageable segments over the course of the summer, either on Wednesdays or Fridays. Like-minded outdoors enthusiasts and knowledgeable volunteers from the Tahoe Rim Trail Association will join and assist you. Registration is full for this year, so plan for 2015. $550.
