Rayband Orchestra and the Raelettes

When: Fri., July 23, 10 p.m. 2010

Guitarist Mike Irwin Johnson, who gained notoriety for his ever-expanding be-bop combo, 8 Legged Monster, just launched an even more ambitious project. Called Rayband Orchestra, it's an elaborate tribute to soul pianist Ray Charles, with a band that can have anywhere between seventeen and twenty legs. Irwin developed the band's repertoire by rearranging the best of Charles' early material, all culled from Atlantic Records. That catalogue includes such gems as "Lonely Avenue," "The Night Time (Is the Right Time)," and the oft-sampled "I Got a Woman" (which would become source material for Kanye West's mega rap hit, "Gold Digga"). Johnson enlisted the heaviest hitters in San Francisco to fill out his horn and rhythm sections -- among them trumpeter Mike Olmos, reeds expert Rob Barics(who plays tenor on this gig), and California Honeydrops' singer Lech Wierzynski, joined by a female vocal group called The Raelettes. They'll take the stage at Coda Jazz Supper Club (1710 Mission St., San Francisco) on Friday, July 23. 10 p.m. $10 CodaLive.com
