Ray Manzarek, Michael McClure and Big Mix: with George Brooks, Kai Eckhardt, and Jay Lane

When: Tue., Aug. 30, 8 p.m. 2011

The Bay Area gave birth to the concept of mixing poetry and jazz in the Fifties, and that tradition continues with recent collaborations between Beat icon Michael McClure and Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek. The duo has a rare musical, verbal, and spiritual connection, with Manzarek's classically-based keyboard improvisations (often including snippets of Doors tunes) adding another dimension to McClure's poems and stories. On Tuesday, the two men will join world/ambient sax superstar George Brooks, bass man Kai Eckhardt (GarajMahal), and drummer Jay Lane (Charlie Hunter). They're all restless, creative spirits, so expect the unexpected when the music takes flight. At Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland) on Tuesday, Aug. 30. 8 p.m., $20. Yoshis.com
