Raven Rainbow

When: Dec. 3-Jan. 22 2011

The show's enigmatic title, linking Poe's naysaying bird and Noah's symbol of postdiluvian promise, aptly summarizes the mystical, romantic bent of its two artists. Alexander Binder's photographs reflect his interest in Mahler, Heavy Metal, and monsters; his monochrome photos depict denizens of the subconscious like ravens, rats, and owls (with blazing eyes, yet!) and sinister plants and trees. His color photos feature animal-headed humanoids engaged in nature rites apparently interrupted by us innocent interlopers; the prismatic color mists are created by custom lenses made, according to the gallery, from "optical toys, old Soviet cameras, prisms, or even plastic crap." San Franciscan Shalo P melds comics and conceptualism in his immersive video collage, "The Raven Suite," in the Project Room, and in his slow, hypnotic video, "The Furnace," about "loss, death and fiery rebirth," in the pew room. Raven Rainbow runs through January 22 at Krowswork Gallery (480 23rd St., Oakland). 510-229-7035 or
