Raul Midon

When: Sun., May 2, 7 p.m. 2010

Not unlike his idol Stevie Wonder, Raul Midon started out as a musical prodigy who overcame blindness to become a multi-instrumental force. Drawing as much from jazz and flamenco as he does rhythm and blues, Midon has not only recorded with Wonder, but went from being a backup singer for musicians such as Shakira, Herbie Hancock, Christina Aguilera, and Dave Valentin to becoming a respected solo artist in his own right. With his recently released third major label effort Synthesis, the New Mexico native relocated to Los Angeles to work with renowned producer Larry Klein. The result is a collection of acoustic-fueled songs with Midon's vocals falling somewhere between Bill Withers and Donnie Hathaway, despite dropping f-bombs aplenty in the otherwise even-keeled kiss-off to an ex-lover that is "About You." Midon will be flexing his golden pipes at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre(3301 Lyon St., San Francisco) on Sunday, May 2. 7 p.m., $25-$55. PalaceofFineArts.org
