When: Mon., Dec. 6, 8 p.m. 2010
Vocalist Raul Malo has explored many musical paths since breaking through with The Mavericks. He's embraced the rhythms of his Latin roots, joined Los Super Seven, recorded slick supper-club pop, and borrowed from jazz, salsa and swing. But lately he's circled back to the genre-stretching, country-based sounds of the Mavericks' later albums. His latest, Sinners & Saints, is an emotionally rich and expansively vocalized collection of Cuban-tinged, Tex-Mex and Memphis soul originals, topped by stirring covers of Rodney Crowell's "'Til I Gain Control Again" and Los Lobos' "Saint Behind the Glass." At Yoshi's(1330 Fillmore, San Francisco) Monday, Dec. 6, 8 p.m. $20. Yoshis.com/SanFrancisco.
