Raphael Saadiq is a soul legend. Until recently, most people associated Saadiq with ’90s R&B hitmakers Tony! Toni! Toné! But Saadiq is so much more than a hitmaker. As his former bandmates have been touring the nostalgic circuit without him, he’s been working behind the scenes on some of the most interesting music to come out in the last few years with Solange, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, and as the composer for HBO’s groundbreaking Insecure. Last year he released his best, and most personal album, Jimmy Lee. The album is named after his brother, who contracted HIV and died of a heroin overdose. On the record he examines grief, addiction, and the ghosts that haunt families in the face of such overwhelming tragedies. He approaches the topics with heartbreak, love, and sympathy. Jimmy Lee is a truly remarkable album that shows Saadiq deserves the same accolades as the people he collaborates with.
