Jazz, Lounge, & Cabaret

Rahsaan Patterson

When: Fri., June 22, 8 & 10 p.m. 2012

There are singers, and then there are others, like Rahsaan Patterson, who are known as "singers' singers." Why else would divas such as Faith Evans, Rachelle Ferrell, Lalah Hathaway, and Ledisi have in the past volunteered their services as backup vocalists to the Bronx-born neo-soul singer-songwriter? He's one of the vocal wonders of the world, blessed with pliant pipes that soar, swoop, slide, and switch between a husky baritone and a lilting mezzo-soprano in the wink of an eye. “Miss You," a ballad on his current bluephoria CD, is a masterpiece of overdubbed vocal virtuosity, and his churchy call-and-response with Tata Vega on the disc's "Mountain Top" is similarly breathtaking.  "If I had to sum him up in one word, I would call him 'uninhibited,' " Ledisi once stated. Patterson performs Friday, June 22, at 8 and 10 p.m. at Yoshi's (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco). $22-$26. Yoshis.com
