Rahsaan Patterson

When: Thu., Jan. 7, 8 & 10 p.m. 2010

Few male tenors are as fierce as Rahsaan Patterson (in this market, Bilal might be his only real competition). An expert in gospel and R&B, the singer graces Yoshi's about once a year with a consistently fantastic band. (In 2008, the rhythm section included keyboardist Kenneth Crouch and Legally Blynd bassist Eric Smith. Tina Broussard sang backup.) Patterson is known for quirky verbage (e.g., My heart is beating repetitiously for you) and lengthy breakdowns, but the purity of his voice is uncontestable. He's one of those old-school vocalists who hits all the high notes without recourse to AutoTune. Rarely in contemporary R&B do we get to hear such clean ripples.RahsaanPatterson  performs Thursday, Jan. 7, at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland). 8 & 10 p.m., $24.
