Rachel Yamagata

When: Fri., Nov. 25, 9 p.m. 2011

Although her name is virtually unknown to the majority of mainstream music fans, Rachel Yamagata's material has been featured in a number of popular movies and television programs, including Smallville, How I Met Your Mother, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and The L Word. That said, she's no mere soundtrack-scorer. Rather, Yamagata is a respected pianist and singer-songwriter who has also backed up a wide range of artists, ranging from Top 40 regulars (Katharine McPhee, Jason Mraz) to more critically acclaimed peers (Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes). Having already gone down the major-label route with stints on RCA and Warner Brothers, the Vassar/Northwestern alum used a PledgeMusic campaign as a means of independently releasing her third album, Chesapeake. Online contributors were rewarded with ten songs marked by achingly lush arrangements ("You Won't Let Me"), smoky jazz vibes ("Stick Around"), and a sultry delivery ("Full On"). Rachel Yamagata will bring these flavors and more to the Bay Area with help from co-writer and opening act Mike Viola (Candy Butchers) at SlimÕs (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Friday, Nov. 25. 9 p.m., $18.
