Rabbit Hole

Rated PG-13 91 minutes 2010

Is Nicole Kidman one of the screen’s most prominent sadists, or masochists? These and other idle questions come to mind while slogging through this suburban painfest about the marital stress fractures of Becca (Kidman) and her husband Howie (Aaron Eckhart) caused by the sudden death of their young son. Playwright/screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire and director John Cameron Mitchell march dejectedly through a predictable series of situations in the wake of the family tragedy, up to and including fumbling infidelity (with Sandra Oh), the nagging of mom-in-law Dianne Wiest, and the pity party’s uninvited guest, guilty teenager Miles Teller. Another burning question: Is this a full-fledged Coffee Table Film, Bereavement Division; or merely a carload of soap? Find out for yourself, if you dare. (91 min.)
