Queen to Play

Rated NR 97 minutes 2009

The miraculous Sandrine Bonnaire, with a little character-acting help from the dependable Kevin Kline, transforms a routine heartwarmer scenario into a thing of beauty. Bonnaire stars as Hélène, a meek cleaning woman whose modest ambition to learn the game of chess finds an ally in her employer, a lonely expatriate played by Kline. Director/scenarist Caroline Bottaro populates the picturesque Corsican setting with sympathetic souls, especially Francis Renaud and Alexandra Gentil as Hélène’s husband and daughter, but it’s the radiant Bonnaire who carries the film. Based on the novel La joueuse d’échec by Bertina Henrichs. This is Kline’s first movie role in French. (97 min.)
