Premium Rush

Rated NR 2012

Wilee, the ace bicycle messenger in New York City (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), picks up a rush letter for delivery, but before he can take off a menacing figure (Michael Shannon) tries to take it from him. Wilee speeds off and they spend the rest of the movie on a breakneck street-level tour of Manhattan Island, mashing together the stories of a Chinese woman with secrets (Jamie Chung), Shannon’s cop-with-a-gambling-problem, vicious snakeheads, and Wilee’s gung-ho messenger buddies (Dania Ramirez, Wolé Parks). Fixed gears, steel frame, and non-stop action. Try to picture a combo of Run Lola Run and The Bicycle Thief that plays out in Chinatown and is more exciting than the car chase in The French Connection. Gordon-Levitt is very good as Wilee, but Shannon is electric as nasty Detective Monday. Writer-director David Koepp (Spider-Man, Ghost Town) outdoes himself; he wrote the screenplay with John Kamps. (89 min.)
