Pre-New Year's Eve Party

When: Tue., Dec. 30, 9 p.m. 2008

Only five years old, local faves Aphrodesia has already made an international name for itself with a big, bold Afrobeat sound that incorporates elements of funk, dub, highlife, trance, and rock. The band's trek to perform with Femi Kuti at the Shrine in Nigeria in 2006 on a biodiesel-powered tour bus is readymade for a multicultural biopic, and the band's somewhat chaotic live sets are known for their non-stop energy. Aphrodesia is political in the best sense of the word, playing as many benefits as paying gigs, and with eleven musicians crowding the stage, their beat-driven revolutionary funk makes every performance a party. Aphrodesia plays the Elbo Room (647 Valencia St., San Francisco) on Tuesday, Dec. 30. 9 p.m., $12.
