Rated R 103 minutes 2010

Comfy old chair of a comedy takes us back to the early days of women’s liberation in 1970s France, where well-to-do housewife Suzanne Pujol (Catherine Deneuve) is obliged to take control of the family umbrella factory when her husband (dependable Fabrice Luchini) has a heart attack over the company’s labor troubles. Naturally Suzanne excels at the job, despite/because of the presence of her former lover Maurice Babin (an enormous Gérard Depardieu), now the town’s communist mayor and chief labor organizer. Director François Ozon is clearly having fun with the affable farce — adapted by Ozon from a stage play by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Grédy — but it’s the veteran actors who drive the vehicle. Deneuve, Luchini, and Depardieu hum like a well oiled machine. Also with Jérémie Renier, Judith Godrèche, and, in cameo, Sergi López (103 min.)
