Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold

Morgan Spurlock already wrecked his body eating junk food in Super Size Me, so he might as well sell his soul — or at least his movie, in this wickedly funny documentary about how he peddled $1.5 million worth of “branding integration” (aka product placement) for his exposé of that same ubiquitous practice. So we get Spurlock trolling the inner workings of stealth advertising (and the other kind too) on behalf of the companies who financed the movie’s production. It’s simultaneously appalling and hilarious, and it’s designed to make us think about what we otherwise might take for granted. Among the talking heads are Noam Chomsky, Hollywood placement guru Norm Marshall, Quentin Tarantino, and Ralph Nader, who actually accepts a pair of a sponsor’s shoes onscreen for promotional consideration. We might as well give up. They’ve already won. The film’s title is a nod to the lead sponsor, a maker of pomegranate juice products. Directed and coproduced by Spurlock, who wrote it with Jeremy Chilnick (86 min.)
