Rated NR 139 minutes 2010

Korean character study has a strong flavor of daytime-drama soap, as sixtyish grandmother Mija (veteran South Korea movie star Yun Jeong-hie) grapples with the realization that her spoiled live-in grandson (Lee David) may be involved in the gang rape of a classmate who later killed herself. Oh, and when she’s not dealing with that, Mija comes to grips with her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Director Lee Chang-dong spends the maximum amount of time on Mija’s face, across which emotions ripple slowly as she tries to compose a poem for her evening poetry class, despite everything. Slow-moving and overlong, but casts its spell with great determination. (139 min.)
