Restaurant Details

Plenty has all the accoutrements of your typical hipster café: exposed pipes, pour-over coffee, an abundance of hanging plants, and outlines of dangling Edison bulbs painted on the windows. But this isn’t just some coffee shop. Opened by alums from the nearby Japanese-Californian diner, Hopscotch, Plenty aims to be the kind of “healthy eating place” that its proprietors felt Oakland was missing. This means there are lovely meal-size salads (the Lemon Chicken Romaine is especially good) and gochujang-spiked brown-rice bowls topped with an abundance of simply cooked fresh vegetables. But it also doesn’t preclude the chef from putting roasted pork belly and duck fat gravy on the menu. Much of the menu consists of tartines (open-faced sandwiches, basically), many of which are made breakfast-appropriate by the inclusion of poached eggs and hollandaise. Don’t miss the wide selection of house-baked cookies and pastries.
