Judi Dench and Steve Coogan make an appealingly odd couple in director Stephen Frears’ drama about an Irish-born woman searching for the son taken away from her decades ago, and the reporter who joins her to write a story, but ends up on her side. Earns its heartwarming-ness honestly, with Dench and Coogan mouthing the dialogue – by Coogan and Jeff Pope, adapted from a book by Martin Sixsmith – with utter believability. The subplot, about pregnant young Irish women having their lives taken over by the church, is enough to rouse anyone’s indignation. But the odd couple gives the scandal the necessary contemporary humanist touch (98 min.).
