It feels like throwback week at Yoshi’s, where a stellar run of jazz programming concludes with a tough New York City quartet co-led by tenor saxophonist Jed Levy and guitarist Phil Robson. Mentored by piano great Jaki Byard, with whom he performed widely and recorded three albums, Levy is a New York stalwart who’s equally at home in a burning B-3 trio or a post-bop combo. British-born Robson is an award-winning player and composer known for his refined lyricism. Built on the superlative rhythm section tandem of veteran drummer Billy Drummond and Bulgarian-born bassist Peter Slavov, best known for his extensive work with tenor sax great Joe Lovano, the relatively new band focuses on melodically refined original compositions.
