Phở Shizzle: The Oakland Poetry Slam (too)

When: Thu., Jan. 14, 8:15 p.m. 2010

There are at least as many women poets as there are sensitive guys, but the term "Sensitive Guys of the World Poetry Slam" just doesn't have much of a ring to it. Instead we have an annual tournament where female wordsmiths spar for days, volleying metaphors with as much rancor as two people about to enter hand-to-hand combat. This year, the national contest will occur in Columbus, Ohio, from March 10 to 13. But Oakland is already revving up, with a preliminary round this Thursday, Jan. 14. Come by Vo's Restaurant (59 Grand Ave., Oakland) at 8:15 p.m. for a chance to watch the EastBay's hottest female fighters. Called PhởShizzle: The Oakland Poetry Slam (too), this event will be a training brick for some and a grudge match for others. Metaphor never seemed so exciting. $7.Facebook.com/OaklandSlam
