Pelosi: Let's Investigate Torture and John Yoo

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco says she supports an official truth commission that would examine Bush-era antiterrorism policies, and investigate Justice Department lawyers, such as Berkeley law school professor John Yoo, for their roles in authorizing torture. According to the Chron, Senator Barbara Boxer also supports such a commission, but Senator Dianne Feinstein wants her Intelligence Committee to handle the issue. It's unclear from the Chron story whether Pelosi also endorses the plan by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who has been pushing the truth commission idea, to give Bush administration officials immunity in exchange for their testimony. If that were to happen, and Yoo and others accepted, then any remaining chance of the Berkeley prof being prosecuted in this country for war crimes would be eliminated.
