Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Rated PG 87 minutes 2009

Kevin James is a funny guy, but he should be embarrassed by Paul Blart: Mall Cop. The first ten minutes start off promisingly enough, plenty of laughs and heart, but then it’s all downhill as the filmmakers try to parody '80s action movies like Die Hard by pitting James’ hapless mall cop against a gang of skateboarders and Parkour freaks determined to steal credit card machine codes on Black Friday (or something like that). There’s the good cop on the outside, the SWAT commando ready to take the mall by force, the love interest in peril, blah blah, you get it. Unfortunately, the jokes are a decade late — not to mention PG-rated despite the inherent violence and bloodshed of the movies being referenced.
