Passion Pit

When: Thu., March 7, 7:30 p.m. 2013

When Passion Pit played "Sleepyhead," from its debut album Manners, at Mezzanine back in 2009, the electro-pop anthem had already reached such mass appeal that the dancing, sweaty crowd chanted its chorus in unison. Standing in the back, I turned to my friends and called the band a "one-hit wonder." Wow, was I wrong. Passion Pit's sophomore album, Gossamer, which made it onto our critic Ellen Cushing's list of the top ten albums of 2012, topped charts internationally, but more importantly, it proved that dance music is capable of reaching emotional depth. Even though the band tends to attract drunken, Top 40-listening fans, it doesn't matter when everyone is smiling and jumping around like kids in a bounce house, as they did when Passion Pit played Outside Lands last year. The band plays the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (99 Grove St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Mar. 7; get there early to catch indie-pop duo Matt & Kim, one of the most infectiously fun and audience-aware live acts around. 7:30 p.m., $39.50.
