Paris Can Wait

Rated PG 92 minutes 2017

The bored wife (Diane Lane) of a brusque and busy movie producer (Alec Baldwin) opts out of a plane trip with her husband, in favor of a leisurely road trip from Cannes to Paris with a gregarious film-biz friend (Arnaud Viard). It turns out to be the time of her life, in producer-writer-director Eleanor Coppola’s happy, well knit character study. Lane, Arnaud, and Baldwin are ideally suited for their roles, and even though the roadside gastronomic adventures frequently stray into Rick Steves territory, the Lane character’s midlife crisis and its elegant cure take center stage. This assured film makes us wonder what would have happened if Ms. Coppola – whose 1991 Hearts of Darkness is one of the all-time best making-of documentaries – had continued making her own movies alongside her famous spouse, Francis Ford Coppola (92 min., 2016, rated PG) (K.V.)
