Leading man Jeff Daniels dips back into his well-worn whimsicality – à la The Purple Rose of Cairo, 101 Dalmatians, etc. – with the trying tale of a man-child novelist who retreats, along with his imaginary super-hero friend (Ryan Reynolds), to a country house on Long Island’s South Shore in order to cure his writer’s block. Maybe he should have tried dynamite. As the novelist’s impatient wife, Lisa Kudrow does what she can with the screenplay by the writing-directing team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney, but the maudlin TV sitcom premise smothers everything. The only reason to watch this is Emma Stone (Zombieland, Superbad), as the lonely teenage girl who relates to the frustrated author. Arrgghhh (110 min.).
