Pacific Mozart Ensemble

When: Sun., Dec. 6, 5 p.m. 2009

This is an insanely rich week for classical music, with holiday concerts from Philharmonia Baroque and Magnificat, and Cal Performances’ visits from the Tallis Scholars and soprano Renée Fleming. But the Pacific Mozart Ensemble has scheduled something new and important, the West Coast premiere of David Lang’s 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion. With four-part chorus replacing the four vocal soloists at the 2007 Carnegie Hall world premiere, the performance trades Jesus with the Little Match Girl. For those who get cross at the notion, additional music by Britten, Brubeck, Boyce, Demutsky, Dole, and Tormis, plus a few Christmas spirituals, should placate. Berkeley City Club (2315 Durant Ave., Berkeley) on Sunday, Dec. 6. 5 p.m., $25, $15 for students and seniors. PacificMozart.org or 510-848-8022
