Pablo Menendez and Mezcla

When: Thu., May 27, 8 & 10 p.m. 2010

Pablo Menendez was born in Oakland, the son of folk/blues singer Barbara Dane. He moved to Havana to study Cuban music in 1966 and never returned. He became well known in Cuba for his wide-ranging musical taste and has played Cuban folk and protest music, jazz, rock, and Afro-Cuban styles. Twenty years ago he created Mezcla to combine all his influences. The band's blend of jazz, rock, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms has made them one of the island's best-known groups with a considerable international following. Menendez drops his own bluesy electric guitar style into Mezcla's ever-evolving sound to honor the music's past, present, and future. Pablo Menendez and Mezcla play Thursday, May 27 at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland) at 8 & 10 p.m. ($18, $12)
