.OUSD Embarrassed in McClymonds Affair

Embarrassed Oakland school officials have agreed to finance the McClymonds basketball team’s trip to the state championship after learning in the Oakland Tribune that a rival team was going to pay for it instead. McClymonds, the smallest of the major high schools in Oakland, is one of the few feel-good stories in the troubled public school system. The boys’ basketball team is the defending state champ, and has a legitimate shot at carrying home the trophy again this year. But when its rival Monte Vista of Danville learned that McClymonds had no money to go to the championship game in Sacramento, they raised $1,100. Then after the Trib broke the story, OUSD officials suddenly decided the district had enough money to pay for McClymonds’ trip after all, and called the whole affair a “misunderstanding.” Yeah, right.
